When it comes to an office move, packing may be one of the parts you are least looking forward to. To help you achieve packing perfection with the minimum of stress, we have put together our top tips when boxing up all of your office’s worldly possessions.
- Don’t lose the labels, they’re very important!
You will need to label each box to help with the unpacking process in your new office. Also, if any crates go awry for any reason, the label may well be the only way to identify it as yours!
- Don’t overfill the crate
The safe weight limit for packing crates is 20kg. Paper is much heavier than you think, so be aware of this before filling an entire crate with files and paperwork. If a crate can’t close fully, repack some contents into another one – it’s important that crates can stack safely to facilitate the most efficient moving process.
- Don’t pack too early
You don’t want to be unpacking your crates before you’ve even moved because you need items in there that you have packed too early. If there are items you feel could be packed weeks in advance, it might be an opportunity to consider whether you really need them, and dispose of them if not.
- Take anything of sentimental or personal value home with you.
If it cannot be replaced, don’t take the chance of packing it with the general office contents; take it home instead.
- Label any fragile items.
If something is fragile or delicate, make sure you wrap or pack it in appropriate packaging and label the crate as “fragile”, just to be extra sure.
- Be label smart for easy unpacking
Make sure you know where everything is going at the destination and label it accordingly. Trust us, you will thank yourself for it!
- Plan your packing
When you’re packing sequential filing, make sure it goes into the crate in the right order and the right way round. Label those crates inside and out – outside to give the destination location, and inside to tell you which end to start unpacking at.
- Don’t leave anything behind
Once you think you have packed everything, take one last walk around your old premises to ensure you haven’t left anything. Don’t forget your phone charger and USB drives – they are the most commonly forgotten items in an office move!
- Think ahead to what you’ll need
Make sure you make your life easy when unpacking by ensuring that you have kept any equipment that you will need from the get-go easily accessible.
If you need to seal your crates with ziplock ties, for example, ensure you have a pair of scissors to hand at the destination – don’t seal them into a crate!
